Refrigerated Shipping Container

A reefer is a fully insulated shipping container with an integrated refrigeration unit — drop power, set a temperature, and you have a freezer or cooler anywhere on your site. Used in food distribution, floral, pharma, catering, and ag cold chain.

What's actually inside the box

How a reefer actually works

Unlike an insulated dry box, a reefer runs a closed-loop refrigeration cycle — compressor, condenser, evaporator — driven by a digital controller. Set your target temperature once; the unit cycles between cool, defrost, and (when needed) heat to hold it within a tight band, indoors or outdoors, summer or winter.

  • Holds set point regardless of ambient temperature
  • Cools and heats — protects against freeze and over-temp
  • Continuous-duty rated — these are over-the-road cold chain units

Pre-trip inspection (PTI) before ship

Every reefer that leaves our depot passes a full PTI: hour-meter logged, structural shell cargo-worthy, refrigeration system run through a pull-down to set point, alarm history cleared, gaskets and seals verified, and interior photographed.

  • Pull-down test to −20°F documented
  • All active alarms resolved before dispatch
  • Machinery hours disclosed up front
  • Depot inspection certificate included with delivery

Power & site requirements

Standard reefers need 460V 3-phase power — the same shore power a depot or container yard uses. No 3-phase on site? You have two options: a dual-voltage step-up converter that runs the unit off 230V, or a properly sized diesel/propane generator. We'll size and quote either.

  • Container plug: 30A locking, 480V 3-phase (BRY430P7W)
  • Generator sizing: ~20–30 kW per unit running, more for start-up surge
  • 230V dual-voltage converter add-on available
  • No neutral wire required — WYE 3-phase only

Brands we stock

We source from the three brands that dominate marine cold chain. Each performs the same job; selection is mostly about parts availability and how cold you actually need to go.

  • Carrier — broadest parts network, −20°F to +70°F
  • Thermo King — deepest cold, −40°F to +70°F on select models
  • Daikin — efficient, quieter operation, −20°F to +70°F

Warranty & service

We back every reefer with a 5-year limited structural warranty on the container shell and a 6-month limited warranty on the refrigeration machinery — compressor, condenser, evaporator, control board. Routine service and consumables (gaskets, bulbs) are excluded. Extended service plans available on request.

  • 5-year shell · 6-month machinery, in writing
  • Service support through CoreBox or authorized partners
  • Optional extended-service plans available

Insulation, floor, and door hardware

The cold envelope is what holds your set point. Walls, ceiling, and floor are all sealed with 3 inches of closed-cell polyurethane foam. The floor is aluminum T-bar — grooved so cold air circulates under the cargo. Cargo doors close with multi-point cam locking rods and heavy gaskets, the same hardware rated for ocean voyage.

  • 3" closed-cell foam on all six surfaces
  • Aluminum T-bar floor — airflow under pallets
  • Multi-point cam-lock cargo doors with marine gaskets
  • Compatible with standard cargo-door padlock guards
